starting to build my own life offline

I've gotten so used to documenting everything online like posting on Instagram, saving memories on Facebook, writing thoughts on Threads; that it feels permanent... but it’s not.

If a platform shuts down, gets hacked, locks your account, or just disappears one day… your photos, captions, videos, and memories can go with it. That’s when it hit me. You don't actually own your digital life, it's sitting on rented land.

So i started thinking what would it look like to live online, but own my life offline?

This is a system i’m slowly building.

Building a giant local photo + video library

Instead of leaving everything in apps, I've started storing and organising my content on my devices.

How I do it?

I create folders and albums on my laptop/phones. For example:

  • 2026 > april > malaysia life

  • trips > penang

  • food > food i made/dining out

you can still use tools like Apple Photos or Google Photos, but don’t rely on them alone.

Keep a digital life journal (offline-first)

Instead of letting your thoughts live online, keep your own record.

What I currently use:

  • The notes app on apple

  • Notion! (just remember to export backups if required)

I use it to write field notes or just the below

  • what you did today

  • what you ate

  • how you felt

  • random thoughts

Save your content before you post it

Before uploading anything, make it a habit to keep the original.

save:

  • your videos

  • your edited photos

  • even your captions (in your notes)

platforms compress files, remove content, or change formats over time.

Create a “life backup ritual”

This is a good habit that protects everything.

  • transfer your photos/videos from your phone to your laptop

  • organise them into folders

  • back them up to another device

it takes maybe 15–20 minutes, but it quietly builds your entire life archive.

Create “life albums” every few months

every now and then, slow down and curate your memories.

pick your favourite photos, add some notes, and turn them into:

  • a PDF journal

  • or even a printed photo book

I use tools like Canva (to build my scrapbooks) or Apple Books

Store your important life records

I organise a lot of my personal files locally online. It's so helpful especially when you actually start adulting, (talking to you guys in your early 20s!)

Stuff I organise

  • travel tickets

  • contracts

  • education certificates

  • important documents

Create folders like:

  • life admin

  • travel

  • work

future you will be very grateful for this.

Now I know what you are all thinking, we don't have enough storage to keep everything loaded locally. I also face the same issues! My fix for this is a bit old school, but I actually load up files to an external hard drive. (especially for photos/content).

If you don’t know where to start, keep it simple:

  1. create one folder for your life

  2. transfer your photos biweekly

  3. back it up to an external drive
